Nike just opened the doors to their new flagship store in Central, Hong Kong. For this grand opening event, Nike invited Michael Lau for a collaboration that would celebrate this occassion. The collection is known as the Gardener series. Other than Michael Lau, many of his friends and family, and other local celebrities were in attendance. Accompanied by free drinks, good music, and handouts, the evening was a success and a good time. Especially since everyone in attendance received a Michael Lau Gardener toy giveaway. Also, more than 100 people lined up to get their hands on the Michael Lau x Nike SB Dunk. I guess not everyone was so lucky, but props to those who were able to secure a pair for themselves. Price tag of the Nike Dunk Low SB’s: $1999 HKD.

Asus AiGuru S1 VoIP Skype handset reviewed

While this may not match your speedy new Lamborghini notebook, the Asus AiGuru S1 handset should make your VoIP calling a bit easier -- while you're on the PC, at least. This Skype-friendly wireless handset resembles a Nokia candybar phone circa 2000, but touts the ability to connect via 802.11b/g to make calls. Unfortunately, that excitement was quickly put back on the shelf, as reviewers noted that it only connects via a computer with "customized software" installed (thoughtfully included on a USB wireless adapter), thus eliminating the thought of hitting up a VoIP call whenever near a stray WiFi signal. The 128 x 64 blue LCD was said to be "responsive" to commands, and the 2.5 hours of talk time should be plenty for all but the lengthiest chats. It was noted that the built-in voicemail was a tad buggy initially, but eventually worked itself out, and the most important praise came from the "perfect audio quality" when yapping over Skype. As somewhat of an afterthought, the phone does have an audio output for streaming tunes via Windows Media Center to your headphones or attached speakers, but we doubt your VoIP handset will become your favorite musical liaison anytime soon. The AiGuru S1 performed well enough to earn 8 out of 10 golden stars, but considering that you still need a (powered up) PC to use this thing, £69.99 ($132) seems a bit steep to get your VoIP on.

If you're a proud portable media player owner, or you've got some fancy schmancy streaming media setup in your living room, the Onkyo MP-1000J might not do a whole lot for you, but if you're searching for a simple way to get content from PC to TV, you may want to listen up. The MP-1000J is a sweet new middleman, designed to store your fav shows, clips, etc. on its 2.5-inch hard drive (which you're responsible for providing), and then play them back (presumably hassle-free) on your living room set, in-car LCD, or dusty hotel television. The trick here is the self-contained GUI that shows up on your monitor, allowing you to select the file you want to see; it's akin to having a (very) "light" version of Windows Media Center Edition running the show within the relatively small device. With native support for DivX, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, VOB, XviD, MP3, WMA, OGG, and a few more, this thing will play back just about any file you toss at it. The unit gets a plethora of extras, including a USB cable, AC adapter, 12v car adapter, a trio of display connectors (including support for 1080i over component and Dolby / DTS passthrough), and a svelte remote control to manage the action from afar. While we can't adumbrate just how much this little hard drive / screenless PMP hybrid will cost, the MP-1000J will add yet another alternative to getting PC content to the TV (sans any confusion) when it drops on September 1st.

Not content with simply changing its name, Ziova (formerly Zensonic) has also taken the occasion to hit us with a new wireless network media player sporting their fresh new moniker, the HDMI-equipped CS510. Unlike Ziova's also-recently-announced CS505, which includes a built-in DVD drive, the CS510 is basically just a shiny box that'll handle playback duties of media residing elsewhere -- either on your PC via a WiFi or Ethernet connection or on a USB hard drive or flash drive connected directly to the device. Video formats supported include Windows Media Video 9, XviD, Nero Digital Cinema Profiles, and MPEG-4, among others -- strangely absent, however, is any DivX love, which could just be an oversight given that Zensonic's earlier players boasted support for it. On the audio front, it'll handle FLAC, OGG, AAC, MP3, Windows Media Audio 9, and CD Audio, among others -- and, as you can see, it is also fully Rush-compliant.

Know The Firmware Before You Buy

With Christmas just around the corner, we’re sure that there will be many of you who will be picking up a PSP for someone special. The problem is, you want to make sure it is running firmware 2.00 so they can downgrade or run homebrew on it, so they can enjoy it as much as you are.

We previously reported on this method back in July, but times, letters and versions have certainly changed. First let’s start with determining what firmware it is, without opening the box. First, find the barcodes on the box and look for PSP-1001 K (the 1001 can be different, depending on where you live.) Below that you will see 120V, and below that a letter. The letter is what we want to keep our focus on. Sony has a system in which the different letters mean a different firmware. For example: if the box has no letter, then it is a PSP with 1.50 firmware and was shipped during the North American release. Here is the list of confirmed and unconfirmed letter codes:

No Letter = 1.50 (North-American release) Confirmed
A = 1.50 Confirmed
B = 1.51 Confirmed
C = 1.52 Confirmed
D = 2.00 Unconfirmed
E = 2.00 Unconfirmed (Most likely 1.52)

Note that the PSP Giga-Packs are the unknown, because they are Sony’s latest PSP bundle, they will potentially be either 2.00, 2.01, and maybe 2.50. (because of the holidays and more volume being produced, Sony will be loading their latest firmware onto the newer PSPs.)

The Internet is ripe with iPod nano “first look” reviews hot on the kix of yesterday’s product launch. The sounds of tittering tech cherubs casting early first-looks is nearly deafening as they proclaim on high how the device “looks like a winner”, how everyone is “awed” by such a tiny device, and it’s “the best combination of beauty and functionality of any music player I’ve tested.” The last quote attributed to friendly Uncle Walt Mossberg. In fact, Walt gushes his way through a swooning iPod nano love-in finding the features, PC and Mac synchronization, sound, and battery all to perform as advertised, or better. He found the $39 lanyard to be “perfect” and even dropped the nano “several times” from a height of about 3 feet to see if it would skip — it didn’t. Much more to come.

A homely child of more meager means than its descendants and the first born in the New World, the iPod had only 5GB of storage to its name—though unprecedented at the time, it was immediately rebuked for its price of $399. It had with it a mere monochrome 160 x 128 LCD, 32MB of RAM and 32MB ROM, but included two things then widely unheardof, a 1.8-inch hard drive, and the mechanical scroll wheel. Alas, the iPod didn’t know how to work with Windows, was FireWire-only at first, and only sold 125,000 units in its first two months. In March of 2002 the iPod went to 10GB, but passed on peacefully in July of 2002.

Well, looks like Apple’s updating their iPod starting lineup—welcome the iPod nano (and wave goodbye to the mini, which is now missing from Apple’s page after they announced it going south earlier today). The 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.27-inch device will feature 500 song/2GB and 1,000 song/4GB capacities, a 1.5-inch color display, and, of course, a click wheel, which appears to have a drastically larger center button. If you’re willing to ignore the fact that the headphone jack is located on the bottom of the device (sigh), you’ll be otherwise rewarded with a device that’s no more than 62% the size of the once diminutive iPod mini; it weighs 1.5 ounces (42 grams), has a maximum of 14 hours battery life, will come in black (as well as iPod white), and includes a few new niceties such as a nighttime inverse screen mode. Expect it to have a $199 and $249 pricetag; dock ($29) not included, and new lanyard headphones will be available for $39.

Archos AV700 Reviewed (Verdict: Who Needs a Video iPod?)

The fellas over at InfoSync World puts the smack down on all who say portable media viewers are not a viable product category. They took the Archos AV700 for a ride, and found it to be sweet: the 7-inch screen with 262k colors blew them away, as did the large 100 GB storage space. They also liked the ability to store a wide variety of video and audio formats, and its ability to act as a Windows Media device. However, they didn’t like the mediocre screen resolution of 480 x 234, a so-so battery life, and the level of technical expertise required to really make full use of the AV700. Despite all that, InfoSync still gives it a big thumbs up, and sticks their collective tongue out at the fictional-for-now video iPod.

There’s a new kid in town in the VoIP game, and it’s hitting Skype hard in the wallet — if you open an account and buy a single Euro ($1.27) worth of credit, you can place calls absolutely free to all points in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and a slew of other countries, plus low calling rates to a far larger list of nations. The client itself cannot be construed as feature-rich — there are no bells and whistles, no chat, no conference calling, presence information or other of the niceties that Skype provides. It’s definitely stripped down calling, but free is a darn good price, although no one is quite sure how they’re doing it or what the business model will be. The service is in beta (as all such things are these days), and call quality is reportedly excellent. If you try it out, let us know your experiences in the comments.

Nokia 8800 Reviewed

In the pursuit of wireless shiny things, you’re not likely to find anything much shinier (or more wireless, for that matter) than the Nokia 8800. Sadly, it doesn’t sound like it’s got much going for it apart from that, according to a review from infoSync World: a fairly boring set of features, including a mediocre camera and music player, and fairly dismal battery life.

For a device that’s supposed to be Nokia’s answer to the RAZR, it doesn’t sound too promising — particularly when the US model, scheduled to go on sale next month, is expected to carry a pre-subsidy price tag of $800-$900.

Now, if you expect me to say something intelligent or useful about this item, think again. It’s a fishbowl. What do you say about fishbowls? The only feature that sets this particular one apart, is the fact that, as you can plainly see in the picture, you can hang it on the wall and get away with calling it “Art”. It looks kinda neat too, though if it was up to me, I’d add an LED or two, just for good measure.

It sticks out by 5 inches and holds about a gallon of water. That seems to be suitable for a couple of goldfish and it’ll cost ya $30. I imagine the ladies out there might appreciate this a little bit more than me. -DP

If you for some reason have been holding off buying a video camera because there were none that record directly to the XviD format, it looks like your wait is over. Evergreen has released the “DN-DV320” camera that features 640 x 480 (or 320 x 240) recording at 30 frames per second in the world’s favorite open-source MPEG-4 flavor: XviD. Better yet, it’s all in a fairly compact package for around 17,800 yen (about $158 USD). That seems awfully cheap, and probably for good reason; it features an abysmal 16MB of internal storage, and can only take SD cards up to ~~512MB~~ 1GB (thanks, sodakar). Still, assuming you live in Japan and won’t be far from a computer to offload your videos, this could turn out to be a decent product for you early adopters.

Looking for something to watch while you are out with your Sony PSP? Look no further than to Fuse TV - it’s like MTV, but with music videos. Just go to the main page, click on downloads, then portable video. It’s mostly interviews right now, but isn’t it always nice to find free stuff? Fuse also offers some fairly straightforward details for how to get the videos on your PSP and, when that does not work, links to some programs that will do all the work for you. And since most of you have probably downloaded some video onto your PSP’s before, I think you know the routine by now

PSPeerless of Team Discordia has released an update to his PSPacman homebrew game, version 1.1. This is a Pacman-like game which has great sound, graphics and playability. Changes in this release include:

– Added analog stick support
– Added free life every 10,000 points
– Fixed bug where ghosts would stay blue after you beat a level.
– Fixed collision detection bug where you would die from ghosts when they weren't even touching you
– Added a fruit you can eat that appears randomly throughout each level, it is worth 500 points
– Added a PAUSE feature, when you press start button. Also when game is paused it will say "Press X to quit" this will take you back to title screen.
– Ghosts now FLASH to white and blue before they turn back to normal
– Added EBOOT.PBP for version 1.0 users!

Colour iPod minis by October?

Oh, you know we just hang on every analyst’s word, really. So we’ll pass along these predictions from Shaw Wu, based on supposed deals between Apple and PortalPlayer (who currently supplies the chips for Apple’s hard drive-based players, but stand to derive high revenues from new flash-based chip designs in Q3), that he expects a 2GB iPod mini with flash-based storage instead of an HDD by as early as the end of this year. He also thinks we should be on the lookout for color iPod minis and higher-capacity flash-based iPods by about October of this year — and that the new rumoured video iPods may also not ship til then. This is based on data from PortalPlayer as well as the simple observation that Apple unveiled its then new iPod photo around the same time last year, and that they’ll want to cash in on the same holiday season buzz they did then. Yes, um, logical. If anyone wants to offer us some cash, we’d gladly “predict” these things, too. (Warning: pic — not real!)

Konami of Europe has announced a version of its much anticipated Pro Evolution Soccer 5 will be released for the PSP this autumn.

Due for release on PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC-DVD in Q4, the PSP version of Pro Evolution Soccer 5 will feature the utter realism, intuitive play and fast-paced action of the ever-popular series. The handheld version will also be almost identical in terms of available clubs and international sides, with 57 national sides lining up alongside 136 club teams.

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 also benefits from a number of exclusive features designed to showcase the PSP's capabilities. The highly-competitive multi-player aspects of the game are highlighted using the hardware's wireless systems. Using this, players within a certain network radius can challenge rival Pro Evolution Soccer 5 fans to games, with all data related to match results – goals for, goals against, wins, etc – retained in a running tally.

Solo players can also hone their skills within six different leagues and a host of cup tournaments, and the PSP game can also be linked to the PlayStation 2 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 5 for data exchange. Winning Eleven 9 - First Gameplay Details and Mode Listings!

Hot off the pages of Japan's Weekly Famitsu, the news is out that Winning Eleven 9 is coming to the PlayStation Portable, and this September no less! The port is titled Winning Eleven 9: Ubiquitous Edition, so far match, league, training and wireless ad-hoc modes have all been confirmed, along with an edit mode, although the specifics of it haven't been revealed yet.

Great care is being taken with the controls, which of course can't perfectly replicate those of the PS2 because of the shoulder buttons. Series producer, Shingo Takatsuka, quoted one example however of where to pull of a side dribble at home is a combination of the D-pad and R2 button, but on PSP it'll just take the D-pad. Not all moves will be able to make it across however, such as the super cancel system, but never the less, this is Winning Eleven 9... on a portable... in just two months! Konami hopes using the game's wireless mode, fans at the real matches might load up the game right there in the stadium seats, and have their own tournament before the big boys kick off! Pre-orders are being taken as of right now, and we'll keep you updated with the latest as the release date draws nearer.

Despite the developers saying they maxed out the PS2 last year too, the graphics are again improved, as seen by the players breath on a cold winters game, when the pitch is surrounded by snow! Last of all, a massive five minute movie was recently released on the official site, chock full of gameplay. This is available for downloading below, next to an extended commercial which starts with a behind the scenes look at making the TV promo.

Numark busts out iDJ dueling iPod mixer

Alright mixmasters, turns out that Numark dueling iPod DJ mixer we peeped back in April is indeed not vaporware. Numark will be announcing tomorrow the iDJ mixing console for iPod as part of their summer 2005 product lineup — a two-channel mixer that accepts all iPod models with bottom connectors and breaks out their controls into its dedicated interface. Both channels sport a 3-band EQ and gain control, and the unit’s got dedicated mic and phono/line inputs for bringing in additional signals. It’s also rocking some USB connectivity, enabling it to converse with your portable rig as a music-loading base. What we don’t yet know is the price, but y’know, if you’ve already shelled out for two iPods it’s probably not gonna break the bank either way.

Famitsu's Latest Issue Reveals Winning Eleven 9 for the PSP

With the PlayStation Meeting 2005 about to open for trade industry insiders in just a few hours, the latest issue of Famitsu was bound to have some big news and surprises. The magazine's biggie is obviously its unveiling of a next-gen instant blockbuster, but there are also some details for portable fans to get excited about.

The biggest news is a listing for the PSP edition of Winning Eleven. Announced almost a year ago but talked about only in small doses since, the PSP game is listed in the magazine for the first time under its full name, Winning Eleven 9: Ubiquitous Edition. The game seems to be following on the latest console versions of the game, and is due out in Japan this September (there's no word on a US release yet, but isn't that a nice surprise?)

Humax's LGB26T-PVR LCD TV

This looks to be the same as this Humax 26-inch LCD TV we spotted at CES earlier this year, minus the TiVo, however, although it still has some form of PVR. But the LGB26T-PVR is also HD-ready and comes loaded with two Freeview digital tuners and one analog, plus a 40GB hard drive (a little lightweight if you ask us) and a CI slot for adding more channels through the Top-Up TV service (it’s a UK thing). Tech Digest reports that it’ll run “just over a grand”, though we’re not sure if they’re talking pounds, dollars or Euros.

We’re a little vexed on the finer points of Moto’s supposed intentions, but Crain’s Chicago Business is reporting Ed ZNDR has plans to release a new, even thinner candybar called the “Scalpel” (SCLPL?), intended to sell for $40 in European, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian markets, and undermine Nokia’s global reach. We’d say that’s a pretty aggressive plan if that’s the case, but we can’t help but wonder why they’d undercut their smallest, thinnest phone—the SLVR—with something even smaller and less expensive; let alone how they’d even be able to manufacture an ultraslim device so inexpensively. All this from a supposedly informed Citigroup VP’s mouth—not the horse’s—so don’t get your hopes up too much for that ¼th-inch thick phone just yet. Thanks to Engadget

IPdrum is rolling out a solution that will allow cellphone users to use Skype on their handsets. They’re calling this the IPdrum Mobile Skype Cable, and since there are no pics, we’re a little bit puzzled by the “cable” moniker because it implies some sort of tethering from phone to PC, which is apparently not the case. IPdrum uses proprietary technology to connect mobile phones to Skype, allowing the placing of free long distance calls worldwide. It’s not restricted to any special phones or restricted to areas with WiFi access. It’ll forward incoming Skype calls to your handset as well as allowing bi-directional synchronization of contacts. No word on pricing, but the Mobile Skype Cable is set to be unleashed in August.

Crash Cinema to Bring Martial Arts to PSP

Crash Cinema has announced that they will be bringing “the best of Martial Arts action cinema” to the PSP. This content will be available from the companies website for download for free. It will, first, consist of trailers and fight scenes selected from over 100 martial arts films.

Later Crash Cinema plans to make available music video montages and documentary type specials. This content will be available on the net, and later, will be released as compilations on UMD. Several downloads are already available.

Sharp also announced their new HTPC today, called the “AV Center PC Mebius.” They announced it, but couldn’t be bothered to actually tell us any of its specifications so we can decide whether or not it’s crap. We do know it has a 32” LCD with the dual display feature we addressed earlier today, but I’ll point out that the screen is not the 32X2. If you have WiFi and media playback capabilities in the computer itself, there’s not much of a reason to throw them in the LCD as well. The press release say the machine doubles as a hybrid recorder and mentions a 250GB hard drive, so at least we know that much.

Sony NW-E507 Network Walkman

Sony has released their Shuffle competition with the NW-E507. This baby packs a ton of features into a tiny 3.3” long device. This is a 1GB model that uses flash memory. One of the highlights is the estimated 50 hour battery life and a quick charge feature of three hours with a three minute charge. Runners rejoice; this device has easy, one-handed controls. There’s a small knob on the end that’s manages all basic controls with ease. The integrated FM tuner is also nice.

The NW-E507 is available for $199 and there is also the E505, the 512mb version, available for $149.

Sharp�s IT-3C2x2 32-inch LCD has built-in WiFi

Sharp announced a new LCD TV with built-in 802.11a/b/g today called the IT-3C2x2 which has a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels and can stream MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files and MPEG1, MPEG2 and WMV9 video files that are stored elsewhere on your home network. Comes out in Japan on the 24th.

Pro Evolution Soccer for the PSP confirmed - kind of

Your prayers have been answered folks; well, they might have been. According to Eurogamer.net, Konami have today confirmed that they are definitely working on a version of Pro Evolution Soccer for the PSP. Speaking to a Konami representative the official word is "Konami does not comment on conjecture."

No official announcement has been made, although some companies are already taking pre-orders for an autumn release. If this is correct, Pro Evo could turn out to be a launch title (or at least very close to launch) for the European PSP and is bound to shift quite a few more units. We'll let you know if and when an official announcement is made.

LuxPro, makers of the Tangent iPod shuffle clones, has released their products, it seems, as the Super Tangent is showing up on eBay for a starting bid of $90 for a 1GB model. The Buy It Now price sucks—$130—but if you can get it for less than $100, you’re getting twice the capacity as the iPod shuffle for the same price (plus even more features, like voice recording and FM radio). I personally am waiting on the model with a screen. If only they’d support regular old AAC, in which I have (dumbly, I’m realizing) encoded much of my music.

Goldman Sachs said Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) hinted that its upcoming Xbox 360 gaming console may be able to connect with competitor products such as the PSP from Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) and the iPod from Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ). Goldman said, "Microsoft also emphasized that networking and multiplayer interactive capability of Xbox 360, offering a free base layer version of [online gaming] Xbox Live (Silver version) free of charge to all Xbox 360 users." The research firm expects Microsoft will launch the Xbox 360 in North America, Europe and Japan simultaneously in November. Separately, Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 3 or PS3, will launch the PS3 in the spring of 2006, "although it is unclear whether this will be just in Japan or a worldwide launch date," Goldman said. Nintendo is expected to ship its newest gaming platform, the Revolution, by mid-calendar 2006. "This would give Microsoft a strong time-to-market advantage, a very important factor in this market (remember, the 18-month time to market Sony had in its PS2 versus the first-generation Xbox helped Sony cement its footing in the console market)," Goldman said.

Pepper Pad is now finally shipping out at a price point of $799.99. It’s designed as a “hassle-free” wireless portable media playing device running on Monta Vista Linux 2.4 CEE3.1. It’s envisioned as a sort of central wireless brain for the home media center, used to control your TV and stereo over IR as well as access your digital media and the internet. It packs an 8.4-inch TFT display, 20GB hard drive, 256MB RAM, Bluetooth and an SD slot into its 12.1 x 6.6 x 0.8-inch frame, and weighs in at 2.3 pounds. Amazon is taking orders on this now, and the first units will ship out to customers on June 28th.

If you do decide to follow their guide (for purely educational purposes, of course), be prepared to invest a little in hardware (all off-the-shelf stuff) and to learn a little about Linux.
